The Department of Education is a unique and progressive department that engages with education’s most pressing questions and challenges. Our innovative initial teacher education programs in early childhood, primary and secondary education create outstanding educators. Through our research and teaching we explore the role of education systems, educators, children and young people in shaping equitable and remarkable futures.

Our projects

  • The Humanoid Robot research project

We examined the impact of humanoid robots on student learning, integration into the Australian Curriculum and the pedagogical approaches that enhance and extend student learning.

  • Teachers Supporting Teachers podcast

Born during COVID-19, this podcast responds to the need to further support preservice teachers as they prepare to enter the profession in challenging times.

  • Children in the Anthropocene research project

This project studies childhoods in diverse urban landscapes using walking, mapping, videoing, photographic, drawing and storytelling methods.

  • #swinprofexp: Professional engagement on Instagram

This online initiative encourages preservice teachers to share their experiences of, and resources from, professional placement and connect with other students and teachers through the Instagram hashtag #swinprofexp.

  • The Global Experience Program

Funded by the New Colombo Plan, this is an immersive 15-day overseas placement opportunity for preservice teachers to work with a mentor and develop their pedagogical skills while connecting with the local community.
